Hey guys,

I appreciate talking to such a community as this, wow!

For one of my clients the NAS is syncing with the Domain Controller's (Windows Server 2003) Active Directory, user list and all, where for another client (different domain, Windows Server 2008) it isn't. They are both succesfully connected/joined to their domains.

How do I get the NAS to sync with Active Directory? The 1st client had a different technician so I don't know he synced it.

Thanks.

most unix based devices can work fine with 2003 ADS, but tend to be one step behind (aka won't work with 2008/R2 ADS for a while). This is why you are best to use windows storage server 2008 to retain full ADS functionality on an ntfs file system. I was thinking of virtualizing a physical storage server i have and using iscsi to link in more common storage.

truth be told. linux based nas (cheap) are better at the nfs/iscsi/smb and the window storage server is better at smb2/AD2008 and okay at iscsi but really poor at nfs unless its just to read iso images (say to an esxi server). the bad part of windows storage server is the tremendous cost and availability (only to oem). The bad part of all *nix solutions is the poor NTFS and poor AD integration.

so i figure i'll virtualize both under some hypervisor and enjoy the best of both worlds.
