Ok I've been having this problem for a few months now..i cant play quake, watch streaming media or anything that is 3d. Whenever i try to the whole system freezes. My guess is that it is because the card is sharing IRQ's with some other cards, all on 11.
On IRQ 11 i have:
3D Prophet II MX 64MB Driver Version 21.81
VIA USB Universal Host Controller
VIA USB Universal Host Controller
Creative SB Live! series (WDM)
Kingston NIC card.

----
Im running on Win 2k pro SP2, Biostar m7mke mobo, 256mb crucial ram. Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks!

install the latest via 4 in 1's (4.37) and grab the latest dets, also if possible move the slot that your sb live is in, what motherboard are you using? it has been found that the most stable configuration of a via chipset is to have nothing in pci slots 4 and 6 as they share irq's with the usb controller.

okay, that is not good (but you already know that ;) ) so lets try to fix it. go to www.usbman.com there are some tweaks there for via chipsets, grab the ones that are pertinent to your motherboard and OS configuration. also do you have anything in pci slots 4 and 6? try booting with a minimal setupp, and see if that works, if not you will need to boot in safe mode, and install the downloaded applications.

I give up...my POS computer owns me. Nobody knows whats wrong. Ill just stick to playing my 2d games, unless someone knows exactly how to fix it.

go here this page has all of the information and downloads you need, make sure you get the usb filter patch for win2000, go to your manufacturers website and download the latest bios and flash to that, what usb devices are you using? I don't think anyone will ever "know" what is wrong exactly, computers are more or less guess and check, if something is wrong you often have to try several fixes before you get it right, but something I have learned, is that in the end normally it works out, I have yet to have a computer that couldn't be made to work with the right tweaks/fixes.

/edit also make sure you get a version of the detonators that you know to be working, the newest ones don't necessarily always work, keep trying the drivers until you can get them to work (the computer doesn't freeze when entering windows)

On your Via M/B, do you have built-in sound? If so, remove your SB and try the onboard audio. You also might try the Via Latency patch available here.

But your SB might be the source of your problem. SB and Via have a bad track record together. Try the built-in sound card and see if it fixes the freezing. I would also try removing/replacing other devices one at a time (i.e. swap USB mouse with PS/2 mouse, remove nic, etc.) between reboots to see if you can isolate the problem. I would also give the Via Latency patch a try before you start. It might be as simple as that.

The Via Latency patch fixes alot of issues, especially between sound cards and M/B's with Via Chipsets. Make sure you have the latest 4-in-1 drivers installed first. You can get both the drivers and the patch here.

Not really, benchmarks have shown the difference to be marginal.

My older VIA chipset won't even enable AGP 4X upon bootup (even though the chipset and video card both support it).

AGP 2X works, but can be flaky. AGP 1X is stable.
