Hello all!

I recently upgraded from a 6850 to an ASUS 6970 gpu. Now every time I cold boot the system hangs a minute after it finishes booting, the screen flashes and I get a notification stating that the display driver stopped working and has restarted. Can this be a driver problem, or is it specifically hardware. This is the same driver I used for my 6850 (newest off the website). I even did a fresh install of Win7 and I still have the same issue. I never had this issue with the 6850, and nothing has changed hardware wise -z68 mobo, i5 2500k, corsair 750w psu.

any suggestions?

This is usually a driver problem. I has something similar with my 6970, and I found that with the most recent drivers at the time the card's 2D speeds were causing it. I created a profile in CCC to run at 400/600 instead of 250/150 and it all went away, but the 11.10 Preview 3 drivers fixed it completely.

Here's a link to creating a profile so you can see if your problem is somewhat similar to what I was having. It only mentions memory adjusting, but adjusting the core is nearly the same steps.

If that doesn't help, try working your way backwards through AMD's driver releases, as older drivers might end up being more stable.

thanks man, I will give it a shot tongiht. I forgot to mention that I did DL the preview drivers that someone listed on the forum, and that was just as unstable.

I followed your instructions, was wondering if I edited the correct items. I do notice that the speed of the core/RAM does change when I select my profile, but how do I get it to load automatically on boot?

My changes in bold
<Profile>
<Caste name="Graphics">
<Groups>
<Group name="Overdrive5">
<Feature name="TimeUnlocked" />
<Feature name="OverclockEnabled">
<Property name="OverclockEnabledProperty" value="True" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="AutoTuneSupport" />
<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="40000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="50000" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="89000" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="PowerControl_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="60000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="137500" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="137500" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_0">

</Feature>
<Feature name="MemoryVoltageTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="0" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="0" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="0" />

by default the core speed was 250, the RAM 125

Those edits are correct. As for automatically loading on boot, I believe you have to manually invoke it. I never found an automated way to accomplish it, but maybe someone else has had some luck.

OK thanks. I'm still having issues with the driver, even though catalyst loads my profile on startup (I know this because I open catalyst, click on performance and it shows 400/600 for speeds. Could it be a possible hardware issue, or is this 100% the fault of the driver?

If changing the 2D speeds or going back to older drivers hasn't fixed your issue, then starting the RMA process would be the only option left. From what I know, issues where the driver stops responding is usually software, but you can't rule out hardware faults even if they are fairly rare.
