Problems with my Abit KR7A-Raid

Got a CPU from a trade from somone on hard, slapped it in my kr7a-raid, it smelled like burning, so i took it out immediatley. Complained to the guy so he sent me anotehr one, same thing happened with this one, i dont know if the cpus were dead before because when itold him i fried 2 cpus, he wasnt very mad. I decided to go newegg and buy a nice oem xp 1800+, i put it in, everything looks fine, i turn on the system, SAME thing happens... i was using a NON-CONDUCTIVE shim on all 3 occasions, then i put in a duron 850mhz with no shim and the system POST's fine, could it be the shim factor or what??

if it wasnt metal probably a non conductive. seems like maybe he got 2 cpus he wasnt sure about.....so he sold em off. get yer money back

Sounds very much like it was the shim doesn't it? 😉 This has been rumored before...a lot of the shims supposedly aren't manufactured to great tolerances, thus preventing good contact between the cpu and heatsink. You shouldn't need one anyway if you take care in putting on the heatsink.
