Just bought the following:
asus m2n-sli deluxe
amd 3.0 2core am2
4 gig of corsair ddr2 800 RAM
750 gb seagate sata hd
(1) evga 8800 gtx 512mb video card

============
i turned it on initially without connecting the dvd-rom drive and got into the bios just fine. after that, i installed the dvd-rom drive, went into bios and made the system check the DVD-ROM drive first (then HD). after i saved the bios setting change, i rebooted with the vista cd, and the system locks up. i get this ASUS ai screen that gives me 2 options:
1. go to bios
2. run system check

when i go to bios, it hangs
i have to power off to get out. when i do that , i get the same ASUS ai screen and do the system check. the system check shows it recognizes the dvd-rom, ram, chip, hard drive then gives me 2 options:
1. go to bios
2. go to boot drive

both hang like before. it just stalls after that.

i tried flushing the CMOS several times, and it gets me to the bios screen, but when i change the bios to get the cd-rom to boot, i get the same problem listed above--goes to the asus ai screen.

edit:
i also swapped out the dvd-rom drive for a cd-rom i know works, and i get the same problem. swapped the IDE cable on the dvd-rom also, and got the same problem.

any help is appreciated!

The enter bios / go to boot drive message sounds like you may not have chosen the DVD
as the first boot. Try unplugging everything but the hard drive,
dvd drive and mouse / keyboard. Remove the 24 pin from the motherboard and them
remove the cmos battery. Wait a few minutes. Replace the cmos battery and the the
24 pin. Unless you have a hardware problem you should be able to boot from the Vista
DVD. Even with bios defaults, when the bios dosen't see an operating system on the hard
drive it will look at the Vista DVD and boot from that if it see's the dvd drive.
If it won't install windows after that then you have to look at hardware. Memory would
be a good first try. The board you have is very, very finicky when it comes to ram.
It has trouble with PC6400 in general. Try a different brand like Kingston if you can.

I agree memory would be a good thing to look at. Try one stick at a time. Could be 1 bad stick.

Vista has a well known 4 Gig at install Glitch.. just remove a stick, and then install.

Give that a try and post back...

Which PSU are you running? I seem to remember there were certain PSU's that had issues powering up systems with 8800GTX's.. I think Enermax Galaxy line was one of them.

Do you have other parts you can test with? I had the same board and I had no problem running it. My config on that system was:

M2N-SLI DLX
X2 5000+BE OC'd @3.0GHz
2x 2GB Corsair PC2-6400
2x eVGA 8800GS SLI'd
500GB WD
Sony IDE DVDRW
Antec TruePower 550
Vista Enterprise x64
