Problems with Microsoft Outlook 2000... suspect router

I set up a router and everything was running fine for about 2 weeks, now microsoft outloot 2000 wont send outgoing mail for some reason... " The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by your mail server. If the problem persists, contact your LAN administrator in Internet Provider "

Its wierd, cause it was working fine before, and browsing works fine too.

Could the routers (Linksys BEFSR41 Ver 2) built in firewall have closed some ports that were open before? I've openned some of them already (to run XBOX connect), but what ports does Outlook use?

Outlook doesn't use an "outlook port", it just uses the standard mail ports. It opens port 25 for outbound SMTP, and 110 for retrieving mail via POP3.

It's doubtful that this is an issue with your router, and is more likely due to your ISP doing maintenance on the server. You could verify it by connecting the computer directly to the dsl or cable modem.

I tried bypassing the router and running the DSL directly to the computer.... Outlook ran no problem, so it has to be something with the router.... any ideas?

okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk....... no its working ok. I dont know what happened... the computer had been rebooted a bunch of times since the problem started, no idea why it works now

It had not been working for a week, I was out of town so couldn't fix it. A week of maintenance? MY ISP kinda sucks but that would really suck

How do you know it wasn't working if you were gone? If it was somebody else in the house reporting it wasn't working for a whole week, well, we all know how reliable reports like that are.

Your ISP finished their maintenance just before you tested with the DSL connected to the computer directly. 🙂
