Problems with Magic Jack with non-Admin account

Hi all,

I followed Mechbgon's guide (very nice work there BTW) to switching my main Windows XP Pro account to non-admin and turning on the software restriction policy. Everything works great except that I am having problems getting my MagicJack (VOIP device) working on the account.

At first when I tried to run the software I got a permission error because the apps were in a screwy place. So I created a new path in the policy editor which eliminated that error message but spawned a new one.

Now when I try to launch the software I get an error mesage "MagicJack is not supported on your version of windows. Check system requirements...".

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this? Or is it possible MagicJack simply won't run in a non-admin account?

It occurred to me to turn off the software restriction policy to see if that was the problem or not. I did and it was. Without that on the software runs OK. I would prefer to find another fix so the software will run with the policy on if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks again,
KeithP

Install it under an Administrator account. Now try holding down the Shift key, right-clicking the shortcut, and run as an Administrator.

Also look at your Event Viewer logs and see what the SRP is actually blocking. You might be able to adjust for it. Holler if you need help :)

If you decide to run the app as Admin as John suggested, then you can also (on XP Professional) make a special shortcut which always runs the app as Admin without you having to manually elevate it each time. Consult this pic :camera: and brew up a custom Shortcut to the app which launches it as your Admin account automagically.
