Problems with KT7A and soundcards

I've been having problems with my SB Live and the KT7A (freezes) so I decided to try the Yamaha based AOepn AW744 Pro card, and with this card the system is stable, but it messed up some windows graphics. The start menu is now all fuzzy, along with some things like the "close" and "maximize" bottons for all windows. It doesn't always occur either, with a reboot there's aabout a 50% chance it goes away, but sometimes comes back. Know what this problem could be?

Here's some info on my system:

Currently running an non-OCed Duron
Abit KT7A with latest BIOS
Latest Via 4in1 drivers
Latest Nvidia drivers for my TNT
Tried both the latest AOpen drivers and the ones that came with the card
Running WinME on IBM HD

Any idea what the problem is? I'm thinking maybe its the Abit board cuz it's having problems with 2 different soundcards... but with 2 different problems so I'm a bit confused.

I've tried, but not at the current moment and the odd graphics appear when running the PCI and AGP at default bus speed. It does seem like a video problem, but only happens when the AOpen soundcard is in.

Also, I have Micron chip/generic board PC133 memory, but since I'm only running 100mhz and also the problem isn't present when I just boot with the vid card and no other cards, I don't think the RAM is the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Referring to the SB Live - try it in PCI Slot 3. Also, once installed check for IRQ conflicts. Disable the "SB16 Emulation" in Device Manager (don't remove it or Windows will detect it every time you boot up). Try lowering your I/O voltage to 3.3V or 3.2V.

I can't give you any first-hand advice on the Aopen card I'm afraid. I personally have been running an SB Live in a KT7A for 5 months now with absolutely zero problems.

I wish I could say the same. Trust me, I've tried every known fix for the SB Live, and I really had to just say "screw it". Hence the new yamaha based card. Could it be the mobo maybe?

Since you say the problems can appear later, not necessarily at boot, it sounds to me like a heat problem. Use the Via Hardmare Manager to see what your case and cpu temps are reaching. Under 100% load 24/7, my cpu stays about 120F and my case stays about 85F or lower. I don't seem to have any cooling problems, so if you're around these temps or lower, you should be ok. Also, my cpu used to run at 130F, before i got a new heatsink/fan, and there were no problems.

BTW, I'm running a non-OC T-bird on an Abit KT7A with a Geforce2MX and a Diamond MX300 sound.

I have KT7A and S/B live sound had lots of problems with IRQ conflicts S/B 16 Emulation and S/Blive value both take 1 IRQ each can somebody tell me what S/B16 Emulation is for .

Hmm...shame those 4in1's didn't fix the problem.. unless you didn't try em?

SB16 emulation is for sound in legacy apps

Tried your suggestions MCS, and many more, but nothing has done anything to help the problem.

Highly doubt its a cooling problem, temps are around mid 30's Celcius for CPU when not overclocked and high 20's Celcius for the case temperature (Hey, I'm Canadian 🙂) When I say it doesn't always appear at bootup I mean that it sorta happens at random intervals. Like sometimes at bootup, sometimes after 5 min, sometimes after 10 min...

Tried the Via4in1's... doesn't help the problem either.

Its an odd problem so maybe its the RAM or mobo that's having the problem? Thing is most problems are not hardware problems so I know there probably is somethign I can do to fix it.. but really have no clue what else I can try.

And I am sure people telling you how perfect their KT7A and SBLive runs doesn't help you either does it?

What exactly is the problem you were getting with the Live! Freezes where? Doing what?

Random freezes. At any time. Usually takes less than 5 minutes before the whole thing locks up... and often corrupts my registry while doing it.

An update about the problem with the AOpen card. The 'fuzziness' and stuff that appears on the Start button and start menu among aother things isn't just something random, Windows seems to project other things on the screen onto those parts. I noticed when I was playing some online poker... there was a part of the Queen of Hearts showing on the start button. And another part of the game's graphic in the startmenu where it's suppsoed to say "Windows Millenium Eddition". Anyone else experience these problems?

Nick

I've tried PCI2-3-4 and all the same. Been testing out the 'startbutton-graphics' problem more, and it seems the more stuff I do, the higher the likelyhood it happens. Like this time I boot and its fine, but then I tried opening serveral programs, connecting to the net, turning monitor on/off, and then the problem pops up. Its just odd.

what bois are you running I to have a soundblaster live 5.1 plat. was running fine till i put on bios zt, went back to wz and all was good again

Hmmm interesting point. My original BIOS didn't work so I flashed to the ZT BIOS, guess I'll give WZ a try. Thanks 🙂
