I'm having problems with IE (Version: 7.0.5730.13). I usually use Firefox but there are times I want to use IE.

At these forums, I have to do replies, posts, etc. in a new window. Left clicking does nothing. I can't subscribe to a thread without posting in it. There's no way to do it.

When I open IE, there's two tabs, no idea why.

In Add/Remove Programs, IE is there but there's no option to remove it. In Technical Forum Issues Forum a person said it sounded like I'm having Javascript problems on my end. How can I fix this?

Thanks. I don't think there are any addons in IE7. I'll download and install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware first. I've seen several recommendations for that program (not related to my problem) over the last week and was intending to download it anyway. If that doesn't clear it up I'll hit your link above and try to install IE7 over the current version and see what happens.

Should have mentioned Malwarebytes works better in safe mode removing scanned items GL.

GL?? What's that, acronym? For what?

I ran it Quick Scan, regular mode (hadn't seen your post), and it found 1 item and removed it. I doubt it was involved with my IE problem, which is the same. I just downloaded the IE7 install (~14 mb), and am about to run it...

I ran the IE7 install, rebooted as it said I had to, and IE7 is behaving the same way. Hmm. Is there a way I can update my Javascript support?

What if I install IE8? Is that doable?

I installed IE8, but have the same problems. Argh. I'll have to see if I can remove 8. No sense in running beta software if it's not helping.

I uninstalled IE8, but IE7 has the same problems as before. Have no idea how to sort this out. Maybe I'll just have to live with it until I reinistall Windows.

Well, the double tabs when I open IE is solved. I went into Tools/Options and saw that somehow there were two instances of Google in the home page!! I deleted the second. Weird. But I still don't get a response when I left clidk Reply/Quote in this thread. I have to launch from the context menu.

Thanks. I'll try that stuff now. I use IE mainly in instances when I don't want to restart my Firefox. It takes a while to load all my FF windows and tabs, being the biggie. Also, I just did an ISP upgrade a couple weeks ago and have been testing my DL/UL speeds regularly, and going to IE is better for that, nothing loading. Plus I have an application that launches a page and AFAIK it only can use IE for that not FF. Usually I only use that one page when that happens, however.

The IE tab is easy and you just need to use one browswer. If you goto say Microsoft site and you wanted to use IE you would click the IE tab icon and the tab would switch IE for the site its as fast as doing in in IE on my system.

I'll try it. I just downloaded the Java update (~15 mb), closed everything and ran the update, came back here in IE7 and still don't have left click reply/quote here.

Really, I don't have particular problems with Firefox. I'm running Tab-Mix-Plus is about all in terms of add ons right now. Maybe one other, can't remember.

Quick Reply isn't available under Topic Tools? It opens a small window that you can dock to the bottom of the thread.

Have you tried reseting your IE security settings?

This is not a new problem. It happens if you install IE7 and then install XP SP3. I have been there and done that! The real fix is to uninstall SP3, then uninstall IE7. Then reinstall SP3 and reinstall IE7. This is documented many places.

MrChad, Quick Reply is available under Topic Tools and it works, evidently. I never noticed that before and have never used it except right now (this message)! It's pretty bare bones. Can't even bold text.

Well, corkyg, thank you very much. Now I don't feel like a dummy so much! :)

At the moment, when I go into Add/Remove Programs there's no option to uninstall IE7. I can do so for the security updates (about 8) and the one Hotfix (KB947864). If I uninstall SP3, I can expect to be able to ininstall IE7?

Edit: Evidently, the answer is that an uninstall of SP3 will start the fix process:

gHacks

The Windows XP Service Pack 3 is available again and many users have already made the switch to protect their system with the latest security updates. If you have installed Internet Explorer 7 before updating the system to the third Service Pack and decided to uninstall it again you might have noticed that the option to uninstall the browser is grayed out and therefor not possible.

The reason for this behavior is that the system would revert back to an older version of Internet Explorer 6 that would not contain the patches applied by the Service Pack. The Windows XP Service Pack 3 updates the version of Internet Explorer installed on the system during installation of the Service Pack.

The only possible way to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 that has been installed before installing Service Pack 3 is to uninstall the Service Pack first and then Internet Explorer 7. Microsoft suggests that users of IE6 should update their system with Service Pack 3 first and install IE7 afterwards. This would ensure that the browser could be uninstalled normally.

I?m sure that not many users will run into this problem but some surely will. An alternative would be to switch to another browser like Opera or Firefox if you do not feel like uninstalling the Service Pack to uninstall IE7 is worth it.

I go to uninstall Windows XP SP3 and get a warning that a laundry list of programs might not work correctly after the uninstall. That has me worried. I am not too concerned about the other warnings but that warning is scary. There are around 25 programs listed. I have to think that after I reinstall SP3 and run Windows Update, those programs will be alright, but still, I wonder... I might find myself in the position of having to uninstall and reinstall several of those programs, seems to me.
