I've been wondering about the new 12x and 16x burners. I currently have a Teac 58s scsi 8x and I seem to have problems reading the cd's on other systems if I burn at 8x. 6x seems ok. Most noticible are games that install slowly or play movies or other intros, they skip a lot and the cd-rom seems to be working a lot harder than usual (32x ide teac). If I burn at 6x the installations go smoother and the movies play better.
Also - If I use the Imation 16x 80 min, PNY 12x 80 min's, or Kingston Hypermedia 12x 80 min cd-r's (read - cheap) sometimes it can take a minute or two to recognize I put the blank media in the drive. If I slow the burn down to 4x or 6x it picks up the media much faster but still takes a little bit of time.
If I use a Verbatim 16x 80 min (with blue dye) it picks it up instantly no matter what speed. (however these are much more expensive)
I flashed my teac firmware up to current about a month ago. Didn't seem to make a difference.
So, in summary, anyone else have problems burning at 8x or higher on these new drives with cheap media? Any problems reading from the burns on various machines?
thx
