I bought 3 hard drives (2 used) a couple of weeks ago and now that I have enough parts to build a second computer I am having problems with the 2 used ones. When I first received them I put the used maxtor in my current computer, formatted it and used it for a couple of days for extra storage and to make sure it worked and then removed it. When I got parts for a new system 3 days ago I tried to load up windows on it and encountered some problems (It would freeze on me during one of microsofts 'windows must restart your computer') I tried re-formatting and re-installing a couple of times with no luck. I just tried to put it back into my current system today to see if it would work there and now the system won't even recognize it and fdisk can't access it either.
I put in the seagate and got win98 installed and running but I will occasionally get 'slave drive failed'. It also gets very hot, and It seems like I only get the slave drive failed message when it is hot (restarts). If I let it sit for a while it will start up fine. So I guess my question is, do you see anything else I could do to get these working? How do you go about returning this thing (no receipt) or should I just go after the guy who sold them to me.
Both hard drives show up in the system info during boot up.
Maxtor 11.5G model #91152D8
it has a sticker on it saying "tested and serviced to Maxtor specifications 01Jun2000" Does this mean that it has already been returned once for repair?
Seagate 9.1G: http://www.storagereview.com/welcom...gereview.com/articles/9803/980329seamed9.html
It also has a stamp on it saying factory repaired.
Thanks
