In short i have been having problems with my GF4, were it will not play Direct 3D games (mainly testing with 3dmark2001se) but openGL games work fine. Originally it was only Win2k, and a quick test with WinXP on another hard drive found XP to be trouble free. I installed WinXP got everything setup and have found that WinXP crashes just like Win2k.

Then today i did a fresh install of Win2k to test some ideas and when everything get stuffed up exactly like before. I found after i had installed all drivers for my TV card, network etc (more details in system config in my sig) and nothing else other than winzip and 3dmark2001se, and it would still crash with direct 3d use. So the problem had to be driver related. On some strange hunch i installed the Via RAID patch, and 3dmark will now complete and all problems are gone!!

So now to the question, how on earth can the via raid patch fix problems with my video card? my best guess is that the TV card or network card or maybe the onboard sound (c-media) was doing something funky with the PCI bus and that was stuffing up the AGP bus somehow. But they are 2 seperate buses so how can this patch make everything work?

what you should check is the onboard stuff and make sure that they are running on
seperate irqs than your agp card and other cards
I always disable things I'm totally NOT gonna use (like usb ports 3&4) to save
irqs for other things, it fixes MANY problems

I'm not sure about that patch, but you may have jus got lucky ;)
