Just got a GeForce4 Ti4200 to throw into my friend's rig. A nice upgrade from his TNT2.

Anyhow, when I booted the PC I got the videocard error code, one long beep two short beeps. Went back to the TNT2, everything boots fine. Figured maybe it's his 230w PSU, so I went home and grabbed 3 powersupplies: two 300w, and one 350w, the 350w had 16a on the 12v, so I went with that one. Same problem though, one long, two short beeps...

Put the TNT2 back in, and now I'm posting from his place.

As far as testing the card on another PC, I'll have to do that when I get home. But the fan does spin and all... just no video. Any ideas other than an obvious "it's dead?"

He's on a

P4 1.3GHz (400MHz FSB) Willamette
Some HP motherboard i850chipset
- AGP 2.0. (4x)
786mb RDRAM

The card:

PNY GeForce4 Ti4200

NO, I didn't buy it at TD for $120 :p

Got it used here for $25

If I where you i would first update the bios and if that does not help
try uninstalling the drivers before switching cards and then have one (driver) on backup when your restart the computer with the new card.

Good idea, didn't think about flashing his ancient bios. Hopefully I can find the right one...

Thanks.

If your getting bios beep codes it doesn't have anything to do with drivers, they haven't been loaded yet. I have a asus ti4200 that just never really got along with an abit motherboard I had. When the temperature was low, I'd have to remove and reseat the card to get it to boot. It was weird. Its been purring along happily in a system with another board, and that board always worked fine with other cards so it was weird.

Try the bios flash...

...some older boards/cards used to have agp 2x/4x jumpers on them. I dunno if that would have anything to do with it.

Yeah, disregarded anything to do with drivers- if it's not posting, then Windows, along with everything else wont have a chance to load.

I'll sniff around for jumpers the 2x/4x jumpers, it's a possibility. I'll have to get a air can to the motherboard, mofo leaves the case wide open and all sorts of dust have built up- a spider even found a good home on top of his harddrives.

Thanks.

Alright, flashed the bios to the latest version (9/1/2001) still no go. BEEEEEEP beep beep.

Looked around, didn't see any jumpers for 2x/4x, either.

It's a HP Pavilion 9870, by the way.

Please verify your VGA card first, if it is an older 3.3V signaling AGP card, it will not fit properly into the new AGP 4X slots. Only 1.5V signaling AGP cards are supported by Intel 850 chipset. And ASUS AGP 4X cards are rated for both 1.5V and 3.3V.
from the ASUS site

The HP page says the TNT2 is AGP4x.
I figure the 4200 is also, shouldn't be a problem.
