Problems with Geforce 6600GT

I bought a chaintech 6600GT from Newegg to replace my 4400 Ti and now I'm having random freezes in world of warcraft. This has never happened before. I do have a 450W power supply so that shouldn't be a problem. My CPU is 2.4Ghz P4 running on Abit IC7 mobo.

I don't have any other games to test the game on, however, 3D Mark 2005 runs without a problem. Unfortunately 05 version doesn't have an infinite loop option, so I can't test out the card overnight.

I do have the latest drivers and nothing is overclocked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you "clean" your system of your old drivers and install new ones?

No never, I installed the card just two days ago. The freezes are pretty infrequent, maybe once every 3-4 hours.

What do you mean by "clean"? I had just downloaded latest driverss from NVidia and ran the install program.

Using a program such as Driver Cleaner, then installing your new card and new drivers is the way to completely 'clean' your old drivers.

Also, could your card be overheating? Do you have 3DMark05 load temps?

Overheating is a possibility since my computer room is hot as hell. Could you tell me more about measuring the temp. Is there a program that show that?

Leave the side cover off for a while. That'll tell you whether it's an overehating problem or not.

Do the Driver Cleaner bit first. Nvidia does want you to remove previous versions using Add/Remove programs before installing new drivers.

right click on the desktop>properties>settings>advanced>then at the top there is a tab for your video card. click on it. i window will come up. click on temp settings to the left. that will show the temps.

to remove drivers, go into safe mode, and go add/remove programs. then remove the nvidia drivers. reboot back into safemode, and use driver cleaner to remove the stuff thats left. boot back up into normal windows, and install the latest drivers (71.89) off the nvidia website.

You shouldn't need a plug-in for the temp reading. It should just be there. Maybe you need Coolbits? I'll find a link. Be back soon. Edit: Found it. Coolbits

Could it be that Chaintech didn't enable the temp sensor on this card? I guess it's possible, but if they didn't enable it, that's pretty dumb.

Regarding using DriverCleaner, follow the link in my sig. It is an expanded version of what theman is saying. It may or may not help with your problem.

yeah, get NVTweak and you can select each option you want. that would suck if they didnt enable the temp sensor.

Could be, a lot of times you only get the frills with the drivers direct from Nvidia.

Look at his screen shot though. He's using 71.89, Nvidia current offical drivers. He should be getting a temp reading.

It would be nice to know if it is overheating; that could easily be the cause of his hangs. The Nvidia reference heatsink IS junk. One little bump and you can break contact with the GPU. When I got mine, I replaced with a Zalman quickly. It works great now. :D

When your computer freezes in WoW does your audio skip repeatedly ever? That's usually a sure sign of an overheating vid card but even if the sound isn't skipping when the computer crashes it still could be the cause of the problem.

The crash happened 3 times. 2 of those 3 the computer completely froze: num/caps keys were no longer functional, no sounds or anything. The 3rd time the image on the screen became corrupted a mixture of purplse rectangles and the sounds started skipping too.

Btw, I installed NVTweak - still no temp reading. I can see the overclocking bar now though.

I'd definitely say you are over heating. When I OC my vid card and stress test it, I know I'm running too hot when the purple polygons start showing up. You should pull your vid card and see what type of contact the heatsink and the GPU are getting.

you need to flash the bios to enable the temp sensor on 6600gt agp for some stupid reason. and these things run hot.

the bios flash is pretty painless to do but i still have no idea why it wasn't incorporated originally.

heres a link for you if you want
