Problems with formatted hard drive

I formatted my friend's hard drive so we could reinstall Windows 98 on it. I created the startup disk after the fact using my computer. At first the computer couldn't read from the CD-ROM drive. So then I played around with fdisk (from the suggestion of another friend) and now when I turn it on, it won't recognize drive C: saying "Win98 has detected that the drive C does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition." I am now stuck and I need help ASAP!!!!

After you do an FDISK and changed/deleted/added partitions, you need to format the new drive as well before it is ready for use.

That might help, but when I turn on the computer now it says press any key to reboot. I can't seem to get a prompt. Help!

Okay everything is back to the way it was before i used fdisk. So now it says "CDR1011: not ready reading drive E." How can I get it to recognize the CD-ROM drive?
