Ok, i'm obviously not the guru many of you guys are, but i've been having some very stupid problems, that i've never had before. I recently bought and installed an ibm deskstar hd, and asus 8200 ti200 gf3 video card.
Current system
Tyan s1854 mobo (award bios, going to flash as soon as i can back into windows..)
P3 866 fcpga
(installed now) Asus 8200 ti200 gf3..
(HAD)Voodoo 4 4500
20 gig Seagate hd (now slave on primary NTFS d🙂
60 gig Deskstar hd (master on primary FAT32 c🙂
zipcdr/w (master on secondary)
Acer 50x cd rom (slave on secondary)
Win98/win2k on c:
512 megs sdram 133mgz (unknown brand)
Here are my problems... I can get win98 working just fine normally.... But lately i've been having problems with the system randomly locking up.. It seems to do it when opening a window, or a new ie, etc.... some kind of change seems to bring it on, usually loading a program.
It now gives me blue screens up the arse also... I have a very hard time installing games/software and i finally got half life on it, and it works about half the time, spending the other half of the time crashing the computer, it will blue screen and error, then do it about 4 more times, then the screen gets messed up, and i can see nothing.. forcing a reboot.
Then there is win2k.. I initially tried to install it on the d: (hence the ntfs) and it would just error itself all to hell.... not cool. So i then installed it on the c: (took about 10x running setup) and it will now load.... to an extent. I can get into windows about half the time, and once i'm there it locks up usually within about 5 minutes.. i cant run any installation programs or it instantly freezes.. it sometimes even freezes on something as simple as running the c: .
It freezes in win98 setup.. in win2k setup, and in both os's regardless, it just takes some time. I didnt have this problem before the new video card, (i'm hoping updating the bios will help) or hard drive.. (how would that hurt anything?)
I've noticed that the chipset nearest the cpu on the mobo is hot, while the one down by the pci slots is cool in win98 the asus software reports the video card being about 46 c*, and the cpu and heatsink are much cooler as far as i can tell.. any ideas? ram maybe? i'm gonna flash the bios to as soon as i reinstall win98 again..
