Problems with enabling Ultra DMA in XP

How do I enable ultra DMA in my drives? I have 2 harddrives on one channel (one set to master and one to slave) and a dvd burner and cd burner on the other channel (one to master, one to slave). I checked my settings under device manager and found that all my drives were set to PIO. I tried switching the drives to DMA but they still stay at PIO. Any suggestions?

I'm running Windows XP if that helps.

I haven't kept up with computer hardware for awhile and I'm having problems with this issue. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks guys.

Is a specific storage controller driver installed rather than than the generic "Standard" one? In any case, you may try uninstalling it.

What chipset are you running? Please respond and I can further help you.

Not really sure about the motherboard chipset. It's a Dell Dimension 4600

Not necessarily, that happened on my P4 system and installed the intel chipset accelerator software which forced DMA and I couldn't be happier! He could also NOT have DMA drives but that is VERY unlikely because even 1.2GB drives have DMA and IIRC I have an 850MB and 480MB (made by same manufacturer) and I think they TOO support DMA.

My dvd writer and one of my hard drives both support DMA because I pulled them out of my old system and DMA was enabled there.

The thing is, on the primary channel, the dvd writer is enabled for ulta DMA 2 but the other 3 drives are not.

Edit: As for the intel chipset accelerator, I've heard conflicting results when using it. Some say that when they installed it, it didn't allow them to use DMA and others, like in your case allowed it.

I tried installing it a week ago but it gave me installation errors, so I removed it.

Here is a link to intel's download page for your chipset family. http://downloadfinder.intel.co...ional&submit=Go%21

If you don't feel like navigating the page just select these two links (go to the main page for the graphics driver unless your using nonintegrated).

This is the intel application accelerator raid edition download site: http://downloadfinder.intel.co...exe&ProductID=1049

Here are the chipset drivers (you should probably download these first but if you don't, it shouldn't matter too much unless you did a format of your system and didn't install the chipset drivers in the first place.

EDIT If the intel chipset accelerator download gave you problems, download the chipset drivers listed above first.

you could try deleting the controller's in device manager, and reboot and let it reinstall and then try again.

He mind as well do the chipset driver install, installing the intel application accelerator will just replace the controller drivers from generic to the actual ones. We all know generic drivers aren't nearly as good as the real drivers.
