Problems with dvd-rom

My friend and I both have a PC-DVD Dxr2 by Creative and are having problems reading certain CDs. Mostly burned CD's have a problem being read especially if the CD has been burned on a newer burner. The burns aren't bad either because we check them on newer cd-rom's and dvd-roms and they work fine. Are the CDs not working because my drive is too old or because of something else? If it's the drive then I think I'll go ahead and purchase a new dvd-rom. Any help would be appreciated, toa.
