I wanted to throw a DVD drive in my rig and ripped out a second generation Hitachi GD-2000 out of an older system and threw it in. It worked fine in Windows Me but W2K just restarted right before finishing booting up. I thought it was just a bad drive so I bought a Creative 12X dvd drive with the DXR3 MPEG decoder card and the same thing is happening. Right before its done booting W2K the computer just restarts over and over again. Anyone have any idea what is going on?

OUCH... same thing just happened to me. At first I had this SYSTEMced error. And I couldn't fix it, even with all the online help. Followed some instructions on how I could fix it. Tried it, and then that rebooting problem started up. What I finally did was format and fresh install... but hang around, see if someone can help you...

Hi,

I had the same problem you did. But I turned off my automatic reboot in Win2k in order to see the BSOD and maybe see what was wrong. Well, it turned out that a file named CDR4_2K.SYS and this other file were giving me problems. Something about page faults or whatever. Anyways, I do some research on CDR4_2K.SYS and it seems that it's an Adaptec file. Funny thing is, it's for CDR players which I don't have or ever have had. I read some webpages and find out that Windows Media Player 7 (WMP7) in conjunction with Adaptec's EZ-CD creator causes this problem. Specifically, it's WMP7's "Burn music directly to CDR" function that's causing this. Well, enough of my long windedness, here's what I did to solve my problem:

1. Disconnect the DVD drive
2. Boot normally into windows
3. Registry edit time!:
a. Remove any entries with these words: CDR4_2K.SYS and CDRALW2K
b. Try to find this entry:

Hkey_local_machine\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-087002BE10318}

and delete the keys Upperfilter and Lowerfilter.

I had trouble finding that particular entry in my registry, so instead I searched for Upperfilter and Lowerfilter. I found two entries, each with only one of those keys. So I deleted those keys.

(You may want to save your registry before you do this step in case something goes wrong)

4. Go into WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and remove or rename these files:

CDR4VSD, CDR4_2K, CDRALVSD, CDRALW2K, CDRALWNT, CDRALVSD, CDUPFRW, CDUDF, CDRPW
(All these files have extension .SYS) [I only had 2 of the above files: CDR4_2K and CDRALW2K]

5. Go into WINNT\SYSTEM32 and remove or rename this file:

CDR4VSD.DLL (I didn't have this file)

6. Reboot!

7. Cross your fingers and hope Win2k boot normally.

8. Do the steps in order to remove Windows Media Player 7. But instead of removing the whole bloated piece of software, just remove the part that lets you burn music directly to a CD.

9. Reboot!

10. Enjoy your DVD player.

Also, you may want to do some research of your own before you follow my contrived solution. Try these links:

Alright, that is it. I am not responsible for any problems you occur while trying my solution. It was a very tedious process.
