I have a 10x Pioneer DVD drive model 114. I is having a problem with reading disks of any kind, and the problems seems to be motly seeking related. I posted before without many replies so I thought I'd try aggain.

Even when I bought it, sometimes I would hear it hit something inside and it would slow down and reset but that was very rare. But now and espetialy in that past coulple of weeks it is extremely bad.

Most disks that I insert cannot be read. I can hear the head just hit back and forth trying to read the disk but it just can't get it and lately it has even caused blue screen crashes dew to the lond wait without a responce. I ran Nere CD speed on a disk it could read and it more or less went fine with only a few bumps in the speed test. It had many problems with the random seek test, a few problems in the 1/3 test but it could not complete the full stroke test at all as it was just hitting back and forth.

I tried opening it to clean it out but it did not help. The head itself is very free to move along two rails and I did see the two points were it hits when seeking.

I asked before about caligrating the seesk but that just doesn't seem possible or just deoesn't work.

I was wondering if anyone might have or had a Pioneer drive with similar problems that may be fixable in some way.

If not, anybody know of any realy cheep DVD drives that I can get as a replacemnt. I don't need the fastest drive but an inexpensive one, maybee even a free after rebate if possible.

Thanks

I am using the latest 2.06 firmware. I have been upgrading to try to get a more stable drive but it definetly did not work. I would like to try some older firmwares but the firmwares are made not to upgrade newer firmwares.

Anybody know of a way to bypass this restriction and update to older firmware anyway?

Thanks

Sorry I can't really help but I do know that Lite-On makes some nice cheap DVD drives. You can get them at good prices and free shipping @ newegg.com

I have a Pioneer DVD-115 and I'm not satisfied with it at all. It's reading is whack at times and it will won't read right (and freeze explorer) 'till I eject a DVD and put it back in. Sometimes that won't work, either. I have the latest firmware for my model. Sounds like the drive if you ask me, RMA if you can (doubtful?) or do as AgaBooga says. I know I will be when I get my next DVDROM...

I tried putting it appart and cleaning it a while ago. Once I put it back together, nothing but the CD tray actualy worked. It did not even detect an inserted disk of any kind. It did not spin up and the led did not light up. It was completely dead.

I just wanted to try once aggain and put in a CD. The drive hit back and forth for a fiew seccond and then ran the disk normaly.

I tried a DVD and other CDs and they ran fine. There were ocational hits like before but not nearly as frequent. Any ideas what is going on and why?

Thanks
