Problems with drag & drop

I am having problems with drag & drop on my machine. It seems that at times it just doesn't work - I try to drag a file for example and it doesn't move with the mouse pointer. The icon stays in place and there is no error message. If I have firefox open, for example, I have it as the active window then try dragging a desktop icon - the focus instantly switches back to firefox and nothing happens to the icon. I have tried without firefox running though, so that isn't the problem.

This also occurs with bookmarks, firefox tabs, shapes in Visio but NOT dragging the edges of windows to resize, or dragging to select text. There are no error messages at any point.

I am using XP Pro SP2 and a Logitech MX Revolution mouse. I have tried with a different mouse and I have tried without SetPoint running. I am always able to drag things just fine straight after a reboot. It also sometimes works again after it hasn't for a while, without a reboot.

Someone suggested that I add these keys to my registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Start_EnableDragDrop"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoChangeStartMenu"=dword:00000000

...but they were already in existence. I have also tried running these commands:

regsvr32 ole32
regsvr32 /i shell32

...but it didn't fix the problem. This may or may not be related to a problem I am having with Photoshop, in which the program refuses to open or create new image files. Again, that is also sporadic. Sometimes I can open/create files just fine, others it just does nothing - not giving any error message.

Can anyone help please?

Please try the following:
Click Start ->All Progams -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
A DOS command window open, please type "sfc /scannow" without quote, insert original windows CD if it requests. REBOOT when done.

Thanks for the response. I tried that a few days ago and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Let's try something new :)
Right click on My Computer -> Properties
Click Advanced, under Performance , click Settings and choose "Adjust for best performance", Click OKs to accept all the change and let me know if you r still having the same problem with drop & drag.

Is it happen after you install something? especially FireFox, if so, try to COMPLETELY uninstall it to test an reinstall the application.

There are a few other options to try.

WinXP SP2 had a new feature added for mouse accelleration called
"Enhanced pointer precision" ( Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ Mouse \ Pointer Options )

Turn this feature OFF as it tends to play havoc with Logitech's Set Point software.

Also, try turning down the "Pointer Speed" and "Pointer Acceleration" in the
Logitech SetPoint software.

If those options do help, last but not least, uninstall the SetPoint Software.
