Problems with drag and drop file sharing using remote desktop connection in Win 2k server.

Hi Everyone,

I'm having trouble setting up drag and drop file sharing on some Win 2k servers in my small office. We have some APPRO blade servers running Win2k server, and we installed some optical design software on them. Our consultants come in through VPN and work remotely on the machines through remote desktop connection. Everything about this setup is functioning perfectly. The consultants have no trouble logging in, running their apps, surfing the web on these machines, checking e-mail, etc.

The one problem that I can't seem to fix is that drag and drop file sharing is not functioning. All of the clients are using either Win XP Pro or Win 2k with the updated remote desktop client from Microsoft. The proper box is checked in the remote desktop client software (sharing of local files is checked).

The Win 2k servers are set up to run in application server mode now with windows 2000 compatible permissions. I have tried switching to NT4.0 compatible permissions and to terminal services mode with no resolution to the problem.

Our consultants outside of our firewall cannot drag and drop files, and clients inside of the firewall are also unable to drag and drop filesTherefore, I doubt that it's a VPN or firewall related problem. For now. ;)

Curiously, I have found the enabling box for drag and drop file sharing within Win 2k server. If I go to Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Terminal Services Configuration, a window pops up with a connection listed. The connection is called "RDP-Tcp." If I right-click on this and bring up Properties, a configuration box pops up. I select the "Client Settings" tab, and there is a listing of services that can be disabled. Now, "Drive Mapping" and "Audio Mapping" are both checked and greyed out, so that these settings cannot be enabled. This is the box I want unchecked! Printer, LPT, COM, and clipboard mapping can all be enabled or disabled, but mapping drives can't be enabled!

Does anyone know why this would be?

Thanks!

I just checked my Terminal Services Configuration and the same 2 boxes are greyed out on mine too. I have been told that file transfer is disabled in Terminal Services though. Whenever I'm on the road and need to access files I logon using the Remote Desktop Client, transfer the files to the partition I can access remotly using ftp, then get the files this way. I know that there has to be a much more elegant solution than this though. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks for your input, CT. Right now, the guys working on those servers are e-mailing files to themselves. Yeah, it works, but what a pain! Transferring files through drag and drop with Win XP is sooooo sweet.

My next solution was going to be to start up an FTP server on each box, but that also is not all that elegant.

My suspicion is that I'm missing some crumby little setting or service somewhere that's making this happen. It's so frustrating! I guess I'll keep looking...
