Problems with desktop icons.

This has been happening intermittently on both my Win 2000 notebook and Win XP desktop: When booting, the desktop icons won't load. The taskbar and start buttons are available but the desktop is totally blank.
Sometimes I can get it back by starting an app from the start menu and when it gets going the desktop icons will show up.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I've seen it on a computer at the office just today.

It's the explorer.exe shell that's causing it. Just killing it and restarting the process through Task Manger did the trick for me
