Problems with Compaq Presario 5875 and updates?

I just worked on someone's computer that uses the AMD 751 northbridge and a VIA southbridge. It's a Compaq with an Athlon 650. After installing the chipset updates, it wouldn't boot. It would boot partway to windows and then just stop. It wasn't locked; it was just sitting there like it was waiting for something. I checked the bootlog, and the last thing there was a Successful load message; there wasn't anything there that indicated a problem. Anyone else had a problem with this computer and installing updates?
In short, we had to format his computer to get it to reboot. So much for going over to fix it....🙁
