Problems with Catalyst 5.4 and 5.5

These drivers seem to be the cause of alot of trouble for my pc. Ever since I installed thses my screen flashes black after the tray icons load and occasionally I'll get Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services errors shortly afterwards. If I don't get that, then I get a BSOD that says:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the top message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components,........

I've tried uninstalling them and using Driver cleaner to rid myself of them but it doesn't seem to do the trick. Has anybody else here had this problem? Is it repairable?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

i bought a new card and i does the black screen thingy.
but i've only used 5.4 and xp drivers so i have no point of reference

am currently on omega drivers cos i tried them and haven't been bothered to change back.

Did you remove all the old driver entries?

Also, that doesnt always mean its the video drivers. I had the same problem a few months ago. The first time XP actually gave me a BSOD. I did it all the time, it got to where I couldnt do anything. So I reformatted, and it started doing it again 5 mins after I formatted. BUT.. it started just after I installed a certain program. Uninstalled it, and it hasnt happened again. So you may want to check and see if you installed any new programs since it started. I did before I formatted, and uninstalled a lot. Just forgot about the one causing problems.

EXACT SAME PROBLEM on my ECS KT600-a mobo with AMD 2600+ Sempron. Catalyst 5.5 has frustrated me so much ... am planning to reformat my hard drive tonight ... Can we brainstorm a bit more in this thread .. it's really helpful ..

By the way, there's a pretty solid discussion in This Thread

Here's what I'm using

DFI NF4 UT-D 3/25 BIOS
3000+ venice
Gigabyte x800xl

I know that the passive heatsink on the gigabyte card might lead you to believe that this could be cooling related but I have a tornado over it so cooling really isn't an issue in this case.
I have this posted over at a few different forums and somone said it could be a resource problem so I double checked to make sure onboard sound was disabled and I'm going to disable devices I'm not using after this in the event that this is unsuccessful.
And a couple of people seem to think that it's related to the catalyst control center.
And while I know that I have tried both different types of drivers, it occured to me that the driver that shipped with the card uses the CCC and so that may be one of the problems.

I have completely erased everything from my HD that had anything to do with ATi, first by uninstalling, and then by searching for the files and deleting anything with ATi corporation as the author. I've restarted the computer a few times to check and see if the errors are going to stop and so far, so good, I haven't gotten any yet since then. But like I said, they're random so it's kind of hard to tell. I'm going to try and see if I can get the 5.5 drivers w/o CCC to work if I install it completely independent of my shipping drivers. Hopefully, it'll work but I'm not going to hold my breath because I just got another BSOD on shut down. Worse comes to worse, I'll just use killdisk, reinstall windows and then I'll just try each driver from 5.5 on down on a fresh install each time till this works. I'm thinking this is the only way to know for sure what the problem is.

I've restarted it 6 times since I last posted and out those times the screen only flickered once during the loading of the tray icon and the other 5 times nothing happened. It seems as though CCC is to blame. The fact that the screen still flickered makes me think that there still may be some files associated with CCC on my computer so I'm going to reinstall windows tonight and then reinstall the 5.5 drivers w/o CCC, then I'll reboot a few times to make sure everything's good to go and I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks.

That's good news Jcollins. Please keep us posted. By the way, I never had CCC installed .. so am not sure if STOP: 0x0000008E error was because of it.

Most of the threads I went though point to a fauly memory stick....

Perhaps it's not so much an issue of CCC but maybe it's a case of older drivers being incompatible with the newer drivers. What drivers were you using prior to 5.5?

Hey!! Found my problem. After reading 100s of posts on various websites, I ran some harware tests. memtest86+ helped me detect that one of my sticks was faulty. I ran the test multiple times on multiple computers, and every time that stick started failing in the test (and no other sticks). It was one of the sticks in a pair of Kingston value RAM. Now going to RMA it. Anyway, just to be on the safe side, I'm doing a clean install after using killdisk. Then I'll install Catalyst 5.6 released today ...

p.s.: By the way, since I built a new system from scratch, I used Catalyst 5.5 from the very begining.

Brian, .. Mine is a VIA motherboard.. Any known issues with it? Also, how and why would FASTWRITES in the BIOS help?
