I have AT&T for cable modem internet access. They recently switched to a different network because they couldn't buy excite@home. My cable access was okay after the switch until a few weeks ago. I had an old RCA cable modem that would not block sync anymore. An AT&T tech came out and switched the modem with a Motorola Surfboard 4100. He said that it wasn't the cable connection because I had a strong signal leading all the way to the cable modem itself. After the switch my down speeds changed from 1.5-2mbps to 384kbps. As if that wasn't bad enough... Everytime I try to join any game server(quake3, countr-strike, serious sam) my internet connection stops. For instance, I have several computers behind a Linksys router. If anyone of my game machines tries to connect to a game server, none of the other computers can browse. I also noticed the cable modem doesn't respond to ping commands on the WAN and LAN interfaces during this period. After the game machine trying to join timeouts the cable modem will start working after a few minutes. I also tried connecting to a game server with the machine directly connected to the cable modem. I get the same results. I also notice a serious slow down/stall if more than person tries to browse the internet at once. One computer browsing at a time seems okay. AT&T is clueless. Has anyone experienced this before?
