Problems with Asus CUSL2 and USB Intellimouse

I recently purchased the Asus CUSL2 MB with a PIII 866 CPU and I'm having problems with Microsoft's Optical Explorer mouse. This mouse is physically connected to the USB port and I can't get Windows (Win98 Second Edition) to load the MS Intellimouse driver. It loads a driver called "HID-Compliant Mouse" as the primary driver. The mouse seems to works okay, but during shutdown the mouse starts
flashing and then the normal shutdown sequence locks up. While locked up, if I unplug the mouse from the USB port the computer will continue with its normal shutdown. Called MS Tech support and after a hour of trying things they gave up and said it was a MB problem with the USB port. I even gone so far as . . . reseting the BIOS to default, re-formating the HD, re-installing Windows, loading Asus's latest drivers and all with only the video card, mouse and CDRom installed, nothing seems to work

[Any suggestions ??]

Set the BIOS to disable Legacy USB Support. That should fix your problem. Also make sure that you are using the latest BIOS, either 1003 Final or 1005 Beta 007.

Flashing the BIOS from 1002 to 1003 and disabling the Legacy USB in the Bios setup fixed the hang-up during shutdown. But, now there's another problem, the computer will not shut off . . . it is re-starts and boots into the Bios setup screen.

I run my Intellimouse Optical off the PS2 port using the USB-to-PS2 green adapter that comes with the mouse. It frees up a USB port, too.

Now let me tack a question onto this thread: What exactly is "Legacy USB Support" anyway? I read through the CUSL2 manual and it does a pretty poor job of explaining. Anyone care to take a stab at it?

Legacy USB Support is support for USB keyboards and mice in DOS Mode. Few people require it any more.

Ranger361: do you have an SBLive? Usually that is the cause of reboot problems.

Enable LPT Interrupt Sharing in the SB Emulation Device in the device manager.

Disable the DOS SB Emulation in the device manager (optional).

Set IRQ 5 Reserved to Yes in PCI/PNP Resource Exclusion list in the BIOS.

Other suggestions:

If you are not going to use the 2nd USB bracket, you might as well disable it through the jumpers on board.

If you are not going to use the 2nd serial port, disable that in the BIOS to free up an IRQ.

I do have the SBLive card installed and setting the IRQ 5 Reserved to to Yes solved the shutdown problem. THANKS!!

I looked in the Device Manager and could not find the LPT Interrupt under the SB Emulation Device to enable it . . . Also I couldn't find DOS SB Emulation in the device manager to Disable it.

I took your advise and disabled Com 2, but could not find the jumpers on the MB to disable the 2nd USB bracket. Everything seems to be working now, thanks again for your help. Tech support at MS and the outlet where I purchased the MB were clueless.

Device Manager, Creative Miscellaneous Devices, Creative SB16 Emulation, Setting Tab, check box at the bottom Allow LPT Interrupt Sharing.
