Problems with a system build, I need some help!!!

Ok, everything went well when we put it together. When we tried to boot up it doesn't detect the harddrive. The drive is a 100 GB Western Digital Special Edition. I checked the master/slave relations (It's the only thing on the primary channel), tried setting it as master, tried setting it as cable select, tried putting it in a neutral position as suggested by Western Digital's website. No luck. It came up with the drive's information once during boot up but now just lists it as IDE harddrive and says that the primary IDE cable is disconnected. The motherboard is an MSI KT-3 Ultra ARU. I have no clue why it's not working... could the drive be defective? HELP ME!!!

The cables for the CD-Rom are in the same orientation and work (the XP cd will run until it hits a point where it looks for a harddrive and it will hang) but I'll give it a try. It's worth a shot.

Check your jumper settings again. WD drives usually have four ways to set their jumpers.

Master (single drive)
Master (slave present)
Slave
and cable select

If you set it for master (slave present) and it's the only drive on the cable, the drive won't be detected properly.

Also, check to see if the blue end of the cable is connected to the motherboard. If it is, then try putting the drive on the other empty connector on the cable. I think normally the master drive goes on the end of the cable farthest from the motherboard?

It's on the on the connector on the end but the cables we got from radio shack lack a blue end or anything like that. I've tried every single jumper setting for that drive that I could find without luck. It's driving me insane.

D'oh! The blue end is normally the connector that's on the long end of the cable so you probably have it set up that way anyway.

I guess you could try swapping cables or putting it by itself on the channel that has the CD drive on it just to make sure it's not the cable or the controller.

Don't forget to plug the power connector into the hard drive either...I still do this one once in a while! 😀

we did try switching cables, and had the same results. I guess we could try turning them the other way, though I think we were right the first time. Our first problem was that no power was running to the drive, but Nate fixed that mistake.

They cables ARE from Radio Shack, which I would think might be a problem, but so far the cable to the burner seems to be working fine. This is indeed frustrating.

do you have any other hard drives to see if the hard drive you got is damaged. Does it have anything to do with the RAID settings of your motherboard.

The harddrive isn't hooked into the raid setup. I could yank a drive from an old machine to see if that works. There's nothing else on this drive cable so I assume it should be at the end. We'll keep on trying switching the cable, drive and stuff till it works. If it keeps this up will try swapping in another drive.

Hey Nate 🙂 First, I was reading the reviews on this board at Newegg the other day and noticed that it was stated by several people that the IDE connectors are backwards! if they are indeed backwards try plugging it in to the 2nd(primary if backwards) slot the CD drive is plug into. Are both the cables that you tried ATA66/100 capable cables? BTW the drive should have come "parked" in neutral which is perfect for being alone on the cable. The rule of thumb on Ultra DMA (80-Conductor) IDE/ATA Cables is that the end connector is master just like you thought. Also, WTF is up with the board not having cables with it? was it an OEM, bulk pack, or refurb? Keep us posted. Edit: I think I answered my own question as I just saw it for 75$ in the refurbs at Newegg 😉
