Asus P3BF, P3 700E@933, Diamond MX300 sound card with latest drivers.

Sometimes when I boot up and enter windows I get a lot of static and distorted noise instead of entering windows sound and sound does not work. Then I either reboot or restart to dos and enter back in windows and the sound is fine. The PCI divider is at 1/4 so the PCI bus is running at 33Mhz spec. BTW this never happened on 100MHZ FSB.

What could be the problem?

Thank You.

I would prefer sticking with the current one.

Strange thing is that at 100FSB and 133FSB it's running at 33Mhz PCI.

Unfortunately, overclocking can cause little weirdnesses. I had none with a C366@550, but I get a few more illegal operations and the occasional spontaneous reboot with a PIII 550 FC-PGA@733. I think you need to go to the effort and expense of getting serious cooling for both the CPU and the case.

It looks like every single extra degree F or C counts. While the CII and PIIIE produce quite a bit less heat than older CPU's, I think that cooling them is even more important. Counterintuitive, neh?

Diamond soundcards aren't very tolerant to higher FSB. Yes they'll bitch and hiccup with a few FSB Mhz. You're better off with another sound card like SB Live. (I would buy things from CompUSA and test them before I buy them online, they're easily bewildered with a few technical terms when they ask the reason for the return, use that to your advantage.)

My MX300 is rock stable and I have never had a problem with it at 143 FSB. (aopen AX6BC PRO II mainboard) It's possible it might have something to do with luck of the draw, or it could be another component that is causing the issue. Try moving it to a different PCI slot.

Thanks for the tips. I do have the latest drivers from Aureal. I did move the card to a different slot. The sound seems to work ok now.

But the joystick sometimes is not recognized and I have to re-plug it into the gameport every now and than. Maybee that was the problem? The joytsick is bad?

Thanks.
