Hello,

I just joined this place in hope of getting some information about my problems with a motherboard. I've been reading articles on this site for about a year, but today I signed up at these forums.

I'm having some problems with a friend's computer. He had a AMD Athlon 1.1 GHz CPU, but I've upgraded it to a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ now. The computer has a MSI K7T266 Pro2-U motherboard equipped with a 256 MB stick of TwinMos PC2100 CL2.5 DDR-memory. The CPU installation went fine and the temperatures are cool. At first it was running at a 1250 MHz, 100 MHz FSB, just like the Athlon XP CPUs do when you install them. Everything worked great. Then I (of course) raised the FSB to 133 MHz, giving the chip a speed of 1 666 MHz. It nicely identified itself as an Athlon XP 2000+ and POSTed fine. Then the troubles began. When starting Windows ME, I just got some BSODs. This happened plenty of times. The BSODs always appeared when switching to graphical mode, sometimes a few seconds after. I thought the memory timings were too low, but I noticed that it was running at only 100 MHz at 2-2-2-5, so I increased the speed to 133 MHz and the timings to 2.5-3-3-6 (the highest possible). Nothing changed. The BSODs still stopped me from booting into ME. I ran MemTest86+ to check if the memory was causing the crashes. It didn't find any problems with the memory. I tried running the CPU at 100 MHz and the memory at 133 MHz, and this worked fine. The weird thing is that the BSODs appear when making the switch to graphical mode (or a bit later). So, I tried running with a different video card, but it didn't make any difference. Then I tried booting in Safe Mode with both memory and CPU at 133 MHz. This, however, worked perfectly. This is also the reason that I find this problem so odd. So, could this only be a software problem? Is ME the factor causing the crashes in this case?

I hope that someone would be able to help me. :)

Hi Guzzi and Welcome to the Forums!

I'd uninstall and then reinstall the chipset (mobo) drivers (including its AGP/gfx driver) and the same for the vid card.

Sounds to me like a bad/missing gfx driver prob (whether mobo or card).
