Problems with a #@$^ing external laptop drive enclosure

I bought a Vantec NST-250U2 laptop drive enclosure and im having problems with it.

It works great except for one thing. If the enclosure is plugged in before windows boots, the drive is not found in windows. But if I wait for windows to boot (as soon as i can see the mouse) the drive is recognized properly.

If I open the device manager I see "The device cannot start. (code 10)" when plugging the drive in before windows boots.

Simply unplugging the drive and plugging it back in resolves this problem. I am using the supplied Y cable on two different USB ports, i am sure it is getting enough power. This problem happens with ALL computers ive tried it on (5 different computers, all running winxp, SP1 and SP2 still the same problem)

Ive also tried disabling / uninstalling all the usb devices after a boot and it still says "The device cannot start. (code 10)". The only way I can get the drive to start properly again is to remove the cable, wait for the drive to spin down, and plug it back in.

Ive noticed that it only does this on a shutdown. If i restart windows the drive is still recognized on boot.

I have a fujitsu 80gb hard drive in the enclosure.

What could be causing this problem?

Any help would be greatly apprechiated.

Thanks

I also had one of those with the same results you stated. I gave up and bought a 2.5 inch Adaptec drive enclosure at best buy for 25$, great drive enclosure and can hold drive up to 1000 GB. Of course good luck finding a 1000 GB 2.5 inch drive...

Normal USB flakiness. It sees the drive, but you probably need to plug in a 5vdc power module to make it work correctly. Some laptop USB ports just don't have the horsepower to run even a 2.5" drive.

Another option you can try, which will bear out the point, is to plug a powered USB hub into your laptop port, and then connect the external drive enclosure to it.

This is a common problem. read the following analysis:

yeah but ive tried it on several PC's. 5 of them actually. one of which is my laptop. And im using a y connecter, so its getting power from two USB ports, isnt that good enough???? 🙁

"After using it for about a week, I have noticed several problems with this enclosure. First, the drive disappears every time I power cycle my computer. I have to unplug and replug the USB cable so the drive is recognized again. A separate USB flash drive I use does not have this problem."

I guess its a problem with the enclosure itself. I contacted vantec, hopefully they will reply 🙁

ideas?

As the article and review I posted said - the author could not recommend that Vantec.

The Y connector doesn't always help when the laptop's USB power is wimpy. I have about 6 2.5" external cases - all of them came with a small 5 vdc power connector. I would not buy a case without that.

That is what I was trying to recommend earlier. You cannot make chicken salad from chicken poop. Well actually you can but it will still be poop.
