i just received my tbird 1.1 ghz and asus a7v yesterday and when i installed it, i kept getting a blue screen while booting up in windows
so i reformatted my drive and attempted to install windows again but kept getting weird errors that would crash right after scandisk
then after 2 minutes, the whole thing just died out
i was thinking it might be a heat problem but i had a alpha pep66 hs/fan which the guy at pham computer told me would be sufficient to cool the cpu
the cpu itself had 4 rubber lil pads on it which makes me wonder if that might be the problem because i don't think it was making very good contact with the heatsink
any ideas what the problem might have been?
im afraid to get this mb/cpu exchanged and im thinkin of just sticking with intel
any help would be appreciated :)

Many of the HS/fans have some protective plastic sheets over the thermal pads that come with them. Did you remember to remove all of them or if you removed the pad, did you use some sort of thermal paste between the HS and core?

i put some thermal grease on the cpu core but not on the ceramic
i looked on the bottom of the cpu right now and noticed that the label has turned almost all black. smells burned too
the pads on this one didn't have any plastic covering on em

I think we have a little confusion in terms here. The foam pads on the cpu are not the Thermal pad that Poof was refering to. He assumed that your Alpha had a PCTC pad attached, but AFAIK Alpha's don't use PCTC.
The 6035 is the Alpha that is most used with TBIRDS. I thought the PEP66 had little plastic 'feet' which needed to be removed for BIRDS.

Don't really know for sure as I use Taisol on all my builds.

the pep66 came with a sheet of little rubber feet that you could stick on but the heatsink itself had no pads when i received it
would you recommend the 6035 instead?
