Problems with 8600GT on silent pc

I have a silent PC from which I recently updated from a 8500GT to a 8600GT, since the fans on these are quite noisy I disconnected them and just used a PCI blower which works wonders in terms of temperatures and with the 8500GT everything was just fine running the beta 174.70 drivers.

On the 8600GT however is a completely different story, 169.21 works fine (though it seems to crash at times for no reason) and I wouldn't have a problem using them since this is not my gaming machine but 169 doesn't let me use custom resolutions (it says test failed everytime I test something) so I tried using 174.70 and 174.93 and custom resolutions worked just fine but for some inexplicable reason desktop graphics performance is low, windows draw and close extremely slow, dragging windows causes the icons to disappear for a few seconds and items on the task bar chug along when closing.

EDIT: It turns out it isn't the disconnected fan, I thought it was the PSU but I tried another one (much higher quality and more than enough to drive a 8600GT) but the problem remained.

I tried it with a benchmark and as it turns out, 3D performance is working fine (it ran the furmark ogl test with acceptable temps for like 10 minutes before I got bored and closed it) so maybe the 2D clocks are messed up? Any ideas??

EDIT: I'm looking for any solution, either being able to use custom timing under 169.21 or being able to use 174.xx drivers with the 8600GT.

I'm thinking of RMAing the card, this just doesn't seem normal, even for beta drivers.
