I built a computer for a friend and now its pretty messed up. Heres the system:
Abit KT7
1ghz Tbird
256MB Mushkin Infineon
IBM Deskstar 75gxp 30gb
Pioneer 16x dvd
Plextor 12/32/10x cdrw
3D Prophet II 64mb
SB Live! MP3+
Vantec socket a cooler
3dcool tornado case

First of all the harddrive doesnt even run in ata66 mode. It runs in ata 33 saying there is no 80 conductor ribbon cable. The thing is im using an 80 pin cable. In fact ive tried two. Then the thing crashed all the time during the windows install. Finally if we add a modem to it it crashes. I figured that these components were compatible and they are all prett good. What do you think is wrong here?

These components SHOULD be compatiable.

Check for bios upgrades, check your bios settings, check your drivers.

I do not like Abit boards myself, i have had too many problems with 'em. I recommend ASUS, MSI or Tekram mobos.

You might want to check the heat sink fan is hooked up correctly for the crashing. Definitely make sure you BIOS is set up correctly. Also, it's been my experience that the KT133 chipset is not completely compatible with everything, so your modem may just not want to work with the chipset. As for the ATA33 thing, how are you finding that it is only running in ATA33, and not ATA66?? Are you doing a benchmark?? If so, it won't necessarily run at 66MB/s, it'll be much lower. ATA66 just means it can go as fast as 66MB/s.

Should I just leave the BIOS settings at default for the Windows install? I had them semi tweaked before I installed windows.

Never tweak the BIOS settings before installing windows, leave them at default (or worst perfomance) setting.

After everything is verified to work together, then you start tweaking.
