Problems with 16x running in nonSLI mode

I get no post when I try to run the board in nonSLI mode from the first PCI-E slot and DBracket reports a memory intialization error (134red, 2green)., 2nd slot posts but is only at 1x. So I put the chip into SLI mode and first slot now posts fine but is only running at 8x (also just pulling the chip completely does this). So has anyone else had a problem like this? Ive called MSI and they suggested checking the card in another board which I have no access to or RMAing the motherboard. thx

Honestly, if it works fine in 8x mode, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not cool that your system isn't working completely right, but there's no performance hit from running in 8x mode.

yea thats true, actually 1x seemed to play great to me also, 8x jumped 3dmark05 up 700 points, but BF2 seems to play the same both ways..

I just put the single x800pro in and it runs it at 8x lol, ok I don't actually run it in "SLI" but the board must be set to SLI is what I meant.

I think the more appropriate question is: Why would you buy an SLI board and then stick an ATI card in it?

Cause it was 5$ cheaper than the non-SLI MSI, and I went with ATI because they are cheaper of course. Sorry but can we please get back on topic...

Yeah, seriously.

Yeah, seriously.

Didn't know it was a crime to use an ATI card in an SLI ready motherboard. He had a perfectly good reason why he got the SLI motherboard and stated it above your post.

Upon comparing the two boards, the differences appear to be:
SLI
2x PCI-x16
3x PCI
Onboard SBLive!
Single Ethernet
4x USB 2.0
2x 1394a (not seeing the 2nd firewire though)
4x SATA 150

Non SLI
1x PCI x16
4x PCI
Realtek Onboard
Dual Ethernet
6x USB 2.0 ports
1x firewire port
1x PCI x1 slot
8x SATA 150
1x PCI x4

If it were me I would've gone with the non-SLI, as the extra USB ports are what I would've needed (I'm hurting for USB a little right now) especially since I already have an audigy 2 ZS from a previous system. Don't know how good the quality is on the onboard SBLive, so don't know if that's worth it either. The 2nd ethernet, extra PCI express slots and extra SATA slots probably didn't matter for him anyhow. Still, I guess that leaves open the option of upgrading to SLI, eh? =p

In regards to the original topic, I would RMA the board. Sounds like a faulty PCI-Express slot.
