Problems with 1200C & Chrome Orb

I've got a chrome orb (Rated for 1.3ghz) on a 1200C .. If I run at 1200 it goes up to ~70 degrees and locks up .. My orb didn't come with the plastic tab, just the thermal pad .. I've checked and the pad is sitting on the die .. The fan is also going at about 5600 rpm (box says 5500..) So any ideas? I've also got the case open with more than enough cool air going over it .. The system temp stays at about 30 degrees the whole time .. :/

Also please don't tell me to get another fan. :p

Sorry to say this but...I wouldn't use a Chrome Orb on a Duron 700...That thing cannot handle a 1.2ghz tbird. Thermaltake has a way of overestimating the cooling provided by their orbs.

How helpful :p

It actually works .. I just had to move some of the thermal pad stuff. it got scraped away when i removed it last.

It runs at about 35 degrees idle, and gets up around 50 with load .. :/

I've got it underclocked right now, but explorer keeps crashing all the time :/

Sorry for being so blunt, but the Chrome Orbs are simply not a good choice IMO (and many others also) when teamed with a hot running T-Bird. I would look into another HSF if I were you. There are many to choose from depending upon your needs, (planning to overclock?) and budget. Also you cannot depend upon the in socket temp probe for accurate readings. Just read through the posts in this forum to get an idea of what may be best for you.

Ok, I give up. This things going onto my celeron if it'll fit :p

So next up, any recommendations? .. I'm not *planning* to overclock, but the option is nice.. I also need something relatively small, this orb is 50x50mm according to the box, and it barely fits with the capacitors on the kt7a ..

Noise isn't really a factor as long as it doesnt rattle or buzz or anything.

So, avoiding orbs .. are cooler master fans any good? and what about those volcano fans, ive heard some people say avoid anything by thermaltake .. but are they any good?

I've seen some people recommend GlobalWin fans .. I'd have to look for one, the place I usually go to doesn't carry them.. are they any good?

I don't want to go through 4 or 5 fans .. :p

Ugh. It just locked up at 34 degrees.

Could my board be the problem? I've got another KT7A, never had a problem with it.. maybe this ones screwed though? I've tried other ram ..

Plus explorer keeps crashing at ANY speed..

Maybe I'll go grab that other kt7a :p

Ok, hopefully my problems are resolved. It's not the fan. The orb seems to be doing a nice job of cooling it .. Through 3 hours of Black & White followed by some Q3A.. Got up to 65 degrees a few times according to the temp .. ('This spec is known to vary' .. :p) but no lock ups, no crashes, etc.

The problem, apparently, was the BIOS .. I have a KT7A I bought a few months ago, which had a 12/15/2000 bios on it .. Worked perfectly, but as soon as I flashed it it started locking up and crashing again. Fortunately ABIT has old BIOSes on their ftp, so I was able to get the 12/15/2000 bios again, and its working great now.

So anyone else who happens to get a KT7A and has wierd problems like this, try the 12/15/2000 bios! :p

ok, my first thought is that the orb's aren't very good compared to most hsf available in their price range. for a good cost/cooling solution i would recommend you look at the taisol's. my second thought is that you should completely remove the thermal "goop" and get some thermal grease. the thermal pad is really a one shot deal, after the first application once you remove the hsf it doesn't seem to get a good, flat contact area again. i wouldn't necessarily say that you should spend the money for arctic silver, but definately use some thermal paste instead of the pad since it has been removed at least once.

Sorry get another HSF. A Chrome Orb, even though its rated for that, really really really isn't enough for that.

Chrome orb or not, it's been running fine since I flashed the bios.. No lockups or crashes. All I've had is a random reboot whenever I try to burn a CD (which I can't see having anything to do with the cpu temp) .. I'm going to get some 80mm fans, one front, one back.. that should be more than enough ..
