problems when changing from Office 2000

Have question regarding problems being encountered when switching from Microsoft Office 2000 suite to Office 2003 suite. Anyone with experience in this area ?

Go ahead and post your questions, there are many people here well versed in using Office 2003.

Here goes.

We recently upgraded just one of our workstations on the network from Office 2000 to Office 2003.

Now that workstation is having problems such as generally running slow/slugish, getting run-time errors, being slow in both sending and receiving e-mails, ocassionally locking up, and not properly displaying data from spreadsheets which are being pulled from our network server (when all other workstations on the network (which have NOT been upgraded to Office 2003) properly display the data from these excel files).

P.S. - Not space problem - still has about 75% space free.

Any thoughts as to the cause of these problems ?

You say that the PC is generally running slow, there could be the outside chance that the pc itself has an issue (hardware fault or virus/spyware etc) and the timing of the office 2003 installation is confidential. I would recommend that you download something like process explorer and analyse any rouge processes. Possibly posting the results of a Hijack this logs here would also help others diagnose your issue.

If it's XP w/ SP2, you will need to either disable window's firewall, or allow exceptions for Office. I had the some of those problems as well until I got the Group Policy updated for window's firewall. I haven't seen any runtime errors, but it might be related.

Besides ruling out spyware I would first of all uninstall Office 2003 if it's possible. Then reinstall it and rule out the possibility that you somehow fubard the installation the first time.

Sorry, operating system is Windows 2000 Pro - SP4.

Workstation has been checked for spyware using Adaware - latest definitions. - all removed.

Workstation has been checked for viruses using Symantec Corp. Edition - latest definitions - none found.

No software firewall on workstation. Hardware firewall on LAN.

If I ran mentioned utility, what would I be looking for ??

Process explorer is basically a better task manager which lists process in a hierarchical view, and allows you to search / kill handles etc. It's useful for monitoring machines in this type of situation where it could be spyware/virus which isn't picked up by scanners. I'm not saying that it is spyware/virus on your machine, but it's something that you should rule out if you can.

Check for spyware/adware/viruses. Check the Event Viewer log for any signs of hardware/software malfunction/misconfiguration. Uninstall Office 2003 and reinstall Office 2000 to see if the problem persists. Post your results back to this thread. :beer::D
