problems w/ Soyo Dragon SY-P4X400 Dragon Ultra

I just built a computer, it seemed to be working fine for a while, but now It randomly restarts on me from time to time. I mainly notice this when I'm running a lot of things at once or when I am playing game for about 10 minutes, then it restarts.

My computer is running:
Pentium 4, 2.4GHz
Crucial 512MB PC-2700 DDR RAM
Chaintech GeForce4 TI4200

If I would venture a guess I would think it would be the memory, but I hear there were problems w/ the via chipset on this motherboard, but I hope one of you can help me w/ this problem. If anyone can help me, you'll be worshipped... hehe

Thanks!

Theres nothing wrong with that chipset.

First check your power supply and then download Memtest and test you Ram. I am 90% sure that one of those 2 are your problem.

Also if overclcoking or have your ram settings turened up, turn them down and try that.

I ran Memtest 86 version 3.0 and it passed 4 times, no errors. So I'm guessing it's the power supply. I'm just looking for someone so I can borrow it from them for now. Thanks for your help. Any other advice is welcome! Thanks again.

Also another thing, how hot is the CPU getting before it cuts off, that may also be something to look at.

I have the same motherboard and the same problem- I'm returning the motherboard for a new one, this one is about 6 months old. I think soyo has a problem with the p4x400. This is my second one, the first one had the same problems but it was the memory module that time around. I doubt it's your power supply, but it could be.

The p4x400 is ultra sensitive to something, it might even be software related. Mine ran stable for about 5 months before acting up again- and it's not a reboot for me but a complete shutdown, that cannot be turned on until unplugged for about 5 seconds. Totally annoying and under the same exact circumstances you mention, multi-tasking or playing games 10 minutes in.

The weird thing is that it ran fine for months, then reappeared...

Check your MB capacitors very carefully, there are people on usenet that experienced similar issues and found bad capacitors on their board. Smell it, does it smell like rotten eggs? Do the capacitors bulge at all?

What brand sound card?

My rig:

P4 2.4
512mb corsair ddr 400
gforce 4200
tb santa cruz sound
antec truepower 500

I'll let you know what I find out...

hmmm now mine is giving me the freeze and hang trick. One thing my friend said... since this mobo is a via chip set... it might have hardware conflicts... which means the nvidia geforce4ti4200 is the hardware problem i think... I have actualyl tested this but... he says ati radeons work much better... i don't know still so confused.
