Problems w/ External HD

ok i have a Maxtor 80g external HD. when i first got it i had no problems, then about a month in one day i just couldnt start my pc up w/ it plugged in, so i unplugged it and once my pc is started i can plug it in and it runs just normal, but that drives me nuts, cause it worked before, anyone have a suggestion? if u need more info let me know
 
Seen this before but I don't know why. We never resolved it on that system, but since it's on 24/7 it wasn't a big problem.

Check your BIOS to make sure that "Removable Drives" are not specified as the primary boot device.

Could you be more specific? You say you couldn't start up your PC with it plugged in... do you mean it wouldn't POST, or just wouldn't finish loading the operating system?
