Problems w/autoplay function in WinXP

Hi guys,

Can't figure out what happened to my autoplay. I assume it's because of something I installed.

When I put in an autoplay CD, it doesn't autoplay anymore. And from My Computer (as well as my desktop shortcut), the icon won't refresh (so it always shows the icon of the CD that was in the drive when I boot up).

I've tried going to properties>autoplay and switching back and forth between autoplaying and not, but that doesn't seem to help. When I right-click autoplay on the DVD from My Computer a pop up dialogue box comes up:

Windows cannot find Autorun.exe. This program is needed for opeing files of type 'File.' Type in the executable file to be used instead:

And then it gives me a command line to find the exe file.

It's a Sony DVD-ROM DDU1621.

I found this in my random newbie searches on google:
Restore Missing CD or DVD Drive

Reports have filtered in that CD or DVD drives will suddenly cease to exist in XP systems. Most often this has been reported in conjunction with program installations and Windows upgrades, but it has also happened for no apparent reason. This tweak will restore the missing drives after a reboot.

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

I dunno what data values are, and I don't think I want to mess with the registry. Can anyone help?

Get a local guy to do the registry hack for you if you are uncomfortable with editing the registry, good for you that you dind't just dive in and mess things up *applaud*.

But have you tried going to the device manager and remove the drive, and rebooting to let windows re-load the device drivers for the drive? This will usually fix that type of problem.
If it's not seing the cd-rom drive and the hard drive seems slow (assuming your using Win9x, I haven't checkd the XP reg32 yet for this fix)
you can try this in the registry, I'll walk you though this one, as it's pretty easy even for newbies ;).

Start, Run, Regedit,
the Registry Editor will open,
click on edit, then Find..., type in "noide" (not including the quotation marks), if it finds a regkey with that, simply click on it to highlight it then press the delete key and delete that registry key, then close registry editor and re-boot the machine.

you'll find you will now be able to see all ide devices in My Computer now. isn't that nice?

I wouldn't Delete the entry.

That is not your problem.
The drive works, just doesn't Autorun.

What programs have you installed lately?

Thanks, guys.

I'll hold off on deleting the entry (eek! registry stuff) until I get a consensus between you guys.

I'll try the uninstall/reinstall thing though.

I have installed a few things. When I first noticed it happen was when I installed a copy of Total Annihilation and the Core Contingency. When I put it in, it wouldn't autodetect, and the icon wouldn't refresh. I had my friend put it in his laptop and it worked fine, so I just shrugged it off, but it bothers me now since it's happening with all other cds.

Can't think of anything else. I updated and nvidia driver, but that was awhile back (and then again 2 nights ago).

You may want to check the Registry to see if the Autorun has been set.

In the Registry, you can either do a search for NoDriveTypeAutorun or
go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Under Data, it should be set to 0x00000095. (if its disabled it more than likely be set to 0x000000ff)

To change the Value, Right-click NoDriveTypeAutorun and edit the Value Data to 95.
Then reboot the PC.

I tried to uninstall/reboot hardware option. Still doesn't autoplay, BUT w/Jagged Alliance 2, I can right click on the drive and choose autoplay. For Warcraft 3 I still get the "cannot find autorun.exe." I just reinstalled JA2 a few days ago though, because the autoplay thing was annoying me.

As far as the registry, I see:

0x00000091 (145)

Is that ok too? Or should I change to 0x00000095?
