Problems using Windows File Sharing over cable modem

Hey, guys,

Recently I switched from DSL to cable, mostly on account that I was paying for a phone line I wasn't using, which added up to $25 extra per month plus taxes.

One anomaly I seem to be experiencing is that I can no longer access my file share at my university over my cable connection without connecting to the VPN. I went over to two other friends' houses, one with cable and the other with DSL, and noticed the same problem -- the fileshare worked over the DSL but not the cable line. I get a flat out timeout message over cable.

When I say "fileshare", I'm referring to something like when you type "\\this.isaserver.com\foldername" into Run or in an address bar. As I said before, this fileshare is over the Internet.

Any help is appreciated.

Might be that the Cable ISP blocks the regular File Sharing ports.

Which is a good thing since it is Unsafe to log and transfer in clear without security, espacialy with cable connection that unlike DSL it is a shared connection.
