Hi,
I often get problems starting Win98SE if I have a USB scanner installed, but either not attached to the computer or attached but not powered up.
The first error message is along the lines of "The Volume that was removed had files that needed to be flushed on it. Please check that the drive can safely be removed next time." After that I get errors with Explorer.exe etc and end up having to restart, sometimes as many as 7 or 8 times before windows loads.
I've had problems with:
Umax 3400U, Umax 5400U and Canoscan 650U USB scanners
Both Asus A7V/133 and MSI 6167 motherboards (The Asus mobo has a Promise UDMA-100 controller on-board with an IBM Deskstar750 UDMA-100 hard drive attached)
Both SB Live Value, SB Live 5.1 Player, and on-board Asus soundcard
Both Computer have at least 128Mb of PC133 SDRAM
Both Computers are running the latest official BIOSes and drivers (AMD, VIA and Promise)
I've tried everything I can think of including:
Disconnecting scanner before shutting down.
Disabling the software for the buttons on the front of the scanner.
I've tried the Asus websites and can't get any useful help. I've tried the Umax sites but the UK site is at least a year out of date and the only other european site that I can find is in German. No joy with Canon yet either.
Any help/suggestions would be GREATLY received.
Thanks in advance.
Oh Yes. One system is a 600MHz classic Athlon and the other an 800 MHz Athlon T-bird.
