Here is the scenario:

Network:
Cable modem connected to Linksys wired 4-port router
Router port 1 connected to PC1
Router port 2 connected to PC2

PC1 and PC2 are defined as member of workgroup HOMENET. I can see HOMENET (and PC1 and PC2 under that) in network neighborhood on both PC1 and PC2. I have shared folders on both PC1 and PC2. I have got the same user name on both PC1 and PC2 and blank password on both.

Problem::
I can open PC2 from PC1 and access the shared folders on PC2.
When I try to open PC1 from PC2, I get the following error message:

\\PC1 is not accessible. You might have not permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found.

PC1:

  1. 1. Running Win 2000 Pro
    2. Following protocols installed in LAN properties:

    1. (a) Client for Microsoft Networks
      (b) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
      (c) Deterministic Network Enhancer
      (d) TCP/IP

      1. Obtain IP and DNS address automatically
Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server (tried NETBIOS over TCP/IP too)
    3. Shut-down Zone Alarm
    4. Disabled Norton Antivirus
    5. IP: 192.168.1.101
    6. Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    7. Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

PC2:

  1. 1. Running Win XP Pro
    2. Following protocols installed in LAN properties:

    1. (a) Client for Microsoft Networks
      (b) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
      (c) QOS Packet Scheduler
      (d) TCP/IP

      1. Obtain IP and DNS address automatically
Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server (tried NETBIOS over TCP/IP too)
    3. Shut-down Zone Alarm

The link above describes NetBEUI for WinXP (good for PC2). Can you please give me instructions on installing NetBEUI on Win2000 (that is for PC1.) Thanks.

Seems like the network problem has come back to haunt me again. Adding NetBEUI solved the problems sharing files between WinXP and Win2000 machine.

Now I added a new PVR (or DVR) Replay 5040 to the network. There is a user-written utility DVArchive which allows you access and backup the shows from the unit to your PC and back. I can access the Replay unit from my Win2000 machine using it's IP address. But the Replay unit does not seem to see the Win2000 machine.

Here is is the text from the DVArchive Help:
ReplayTV depend on two primary network services. One is called
Broadcasting, in which the ReplayTV (or DVArchive) shout out a message
to anyone on the network who is listening that they are there. The
other is network port 80 (frequently used for web serving). ReplayTVs
inter-device protocol (Lan Sharing) acts like a web server and expects
anything it talks to to also act like a web server and webserver use
port 80 to speak to each other.

If your DVArchive does not find your ReplayTV in the DVR Explorer, try to use the File->Open DVR option and type in the network address of the ReplayTV. If that works, then you know they can potentially see each other, but broadcasts are being thwarted by someone.

Any suggestions from the networking gurus?
TIA.
