problems setting up new machine

I am in the process of building a new computer for a friend of mine. I got them an Asus P4B266-C and an Intel 1.6A. Memory is a single stick of 512 muskin, and hard drive is a Maxtor 40 gig.

I threw everything into the case and started her up...first thing I noticed was that the 512 megs of RAM was only posting as 256...this is w/ default bios settings and it doesn't matter which DDR slot I stick it in.

Second problem is w/ the hard drive. Whenever it is detecting drives during the POST, it shows the hard drive...correct model and brand, but when it moves onto the next screen (IRQ info, etc) it shows NO HARD DRIVE. It doesn't matter what IDE cable I use, or which IDE connector I plug it into, wether as slave or master jumper setting...just nothing.

Any ideas?

You'll probably get the "NO HARD DRIVE" because your drive is not formatted yet. Which channel did you put it on? If it's on the ATA100 channel, it might not show because the BIOS will boot the Primary and Secondary ATA66 channels first. To boot the ATA100 channel, just go into the BIOS settings and change the boot device order to include your ATA/SCSI drive. Hope this helps.
