Problems setting up a wireless network (only between 2 computers)

Here's the situation. There are 2 computers, one in my room (personal computer), and one in my father's office. The one in my room is hooked up to a linkys wireless access point router, which is then connected directly to a cable modem via ethernet, which provides my computer with internet access. The other computer in the office has a linksys wireless USB adapter. What I'm trying to do is wirelessly provide the office computer with internet access as well as set up a network where I can wirelessly send and receive files from the office computer to my personal computer. However, I can't get the office computer to pick up the wireless internet. When I go to network connections and try to view available wireless networks, nothing comes up. When I did Run ---> CMD ---> IPCONFIG ----> it says there is no media attached, even though the USB adapter is plugged in. If I run ethernet from the router to the office computer, it works perfectly. Can anyone help me out on how I can get this set up?

The router may not be set to "Broadcast SSID". If it is not set to do so, it will not show up in your "available networks". For security reasons, it's better to leave it off anyway, but to test your connection you can enable it.

You could try putting the USB adapter into your computer and seeing if you can pickup a signal. I'd try this first actually.

All else fails, reset your router to factory settings, put the USB adapter into your computer... if you don't get a signal than someting wrong with either the USB adapter or the wireless router... doubt it but you can try this as your last resort.

Yep, it wasn't set to broadcast. As soon as I turned it on it picked up the network right away. So now the office computer has wireless internet but I still can't figure out how to share files directly between the two PC's. I ran the network setup wizard on the office computer and specified that it connects to the internet through another computer on the network and it completed fine, but when I run the network setup wizard on my own computer and specify that it connects directly to the internet it does not complete successfully.

Can't quite understand this guide. Does it matter that it is for 2000/NT rather than XP (what I use). I can't find where I am supposed to do this step:

5. Click on the "New Share" button at the bottom.

I also couldn't find where to do this:

1. On the 9x/ME machines, configure them to use "Logon for Microsoft Networking" in the network properties.

Or this: Jack's Page

He's got clear instructions to do exactly what you want. For file sharing I HIGHLY (notice caps :)) recommend using NETBEUI. Sharing by TCP/IP is very sketchy, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Running the network config wizard only makes it worse.
