I am running Windows XP Professional and whenever i try to run Norton Speed Disk or Windows Check Disk (chkdsk) utility with the "Fix Error" option on, the system will inform me that a certain process running has exclusive access to the HDD.

I cleared those proggies on the taskbar and also those in the registry but it is stil the same. :(

Anyone has any idea what exactly is this process running in the background that prevents me from scanning my HDD properly??

If you use Norton Disk Doctor, it will schedule a scandisk on the next restart. try it.
and about the program, be sure you have closed any explorer windows or any other programs that showing your HDD.

With XP chkdsk will not run while XP is running. Tell it to run at reboot then reboot.
