Problems running Half-Life in Win2k

I recently reinstalled Half-Life after switching over to Win2k and am having problems. The game installed okay and starts up fine, but once I'm in-game, the video gets kind of choppy and I'm unable to bring up the menu by hitting 'esc'. When I hit 'esc', I just get a black screen and the game is hung. I get the same results in multiplayer.

Win2k SP1
V770 32M TNT2
Detonator3 6.18

Any ideas?

More details of your system?

Is it VIA / Intel i815e based? If so make sure to have the correct mobo drivers installed.

Try playing in OGL or software and see if the performance is similar / worse, crashes when you press escape etc. Try going back to the 5.30/32's and see if that fixes it, make sure that FSAA is turned off, finally check for updates / see that you are running the latest sound card drivers.

D3D in win2k doesn't work very good. OpenGL performance (for some reason) is MUCH better. Is there a reason you're running in D3D?

More system details:

Asus CUSL2
PIII 700@933
SB Live! X-Gamer
latest i815e chipset drivers
latest liveware drivers (drivers only)

I will try running in OGL mode when I get home. I was unaware that D3D had problems in Win2k and was using it because TNT2 based cards tend to run D3D better than OGL. If that doesn't work, I'll check out older drivers...

I have heard that the Det3 drivers have a refresh-rate problem with OGL - something like it's limited to 60fps. Anyone know about this? Also, how do I turn of FSAA? I thought that was V5 only...

Not specifically the det 3's, but older drivers for me would cap you at 60HZ, but you can download a nifty program called "Nvreffix" which will allow you to specify the refresh rate you desire for your colour rez and colour depth.

FSAA can be enabled or disabled through the Advanced properties section of your video card under display settings.

Nvreffix

Do you have the latest patch for HL? Mine wouldn't work in Win2K without it. I've got the same system as you except for a GeForce SDR in place of your TNT2. D3D vs. OGL doesn't make any difference for me, they're both smooth. I'm running the latest beta detonators (6.27?).

D3D in Win2k is not very good. OpenGL in Win2k rocks!

D3D in Half-life is horrible. OpenGL in Half-life rocks. OpenGL in half-life is much better then its d3d mode.
