I was looking for some ideas on the following error::

"the following error occurred attempting to rename the computer to ________" "the user name could not be found."

when attempting to rename a user's pc (xp pro) i received the above error. i've successfully renamed all other users using the same domain. But only on this ONE particular users workstation, have i encountered such an issue.

Any ideas?

Where you logged on as administrator? if not then when you tried to rename it you put in the wrong username and password.

Log in as administrator and you should have no problem. Unless its on a domain the you need the proper domain rights to rename it.

Logged in as admin?

YUP! As I was successful in modifying all other users on that domain as well. Just not this one user.

I've googled on the error until my eyes bled.

Any other ideas?

If its on a domain dis join it from the domain then login with the local admin accont and rename it.

i was able to fix this.

went to WIN2k domain server. dns. a reverse look up proved there to be multiple pc names with the same IP. deleted the old. issue resolved.
