Problems pinging Windows NT 4 server

I've come across an interesting problem.

I have a windows nt server 4 and a linux box running on the same network.

I can ping the linux box from windows nt 4 server without any problems.

However, If I try pinging the windows nt 4 server from linux, I won't get a response until I start pinging the linux box from the windows nt 4 server box.

would anyone happen to know why?

You have any kind of filtering/firewalling happening on the network or server level?

Hm; is there a network switch between the two boxen?

This sounds like the switch is misbehaving to me.
