I just got an Athlon 64 X2 4200 with Tornado 8 and I am trying to overclock it. I read some reviews for my processor that state that I should have no problems overclocking my CPU to at least 2,600 mhz. Right now, I am only able to achive 2,455 at FSB 223 X 11. And I am only able to achive that speed when I increase my CPU voltage by 8.3% over stock (1.47). My HTT is at 5 , when I change it to 4 it does not make any difference. My RAM only goes up to 235mhz.
If I lower my multipliyer and increase my FSB will it improve my speed.

NOTE: I was able to run my old Athlon 3700+ at 2,500 mhz at 232 x 11.

Thanks

MY PC SPECS:

Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo4-F (latest BIOS)
RAM: 1 Gb. XMS memory (black stick)
CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4200

Well you need to keep you HTT multi @4x, or it is going to limit your OC. I am running my 4200+ @2.618ghz(238x11) 1.475v, and I suggest using a divider for your ram, so it's not limiting your OC. My ram is running at 187mhz. Using a divider does not have a major impact on performance so it doesn't really hurt anything.

In order for me to achive 130 FSB (2530 MHz) I had to jack up my voltage to 1.63, anything below that just gives me blue screen. My CPU now idles at 40 C. and when it's stressed to the max on both cores, my temp. goes up to 53 C. So far, I had no crashes. I think I can increase my FSB up to 35 C, but I don't want to have a meltdown here.

Thanks for the advise svefty!

overclocking does not guarrantee everything. the only guarrantee you have is that it'll run at 2.2ghz. so you might have gotten a dud.

have you installed the AMD X2 driver, MS hotfix and reghack? in some OCs they do make a difference. check if your CPU just fails 1 prime while the other continues.

still, it OC's to 2.4, which means you still saved about 100-200 bucks on a 4600+. and saving money, last time i checked, isnt a bad thing.

1.63v is pretty high. I don't know that I would feel safe running at that voltage.

I checked AMD's website out and I was unable to find any AMD X2 drivers, just some utilities that report core stress level, voltage, and speed. However, MS update installed dual CPU driver for me. My voltage is 1.52 (according to BIOS) and 1.63 accroding to MSI utility. My system was runing at 61 C using a utility that streses both cores to 100% ans system did not crash. It could be that my BIOS is not reporting voltages right? Anyway, this processor was a gift from somebody and I will not complain about something that I did not actualy purchase.
